3 proofs that the Americans can not handle snow

This is the amount of snow that finally got us the long expected snowday

This is the amount of snow that finally got us the long expected snowday

Based on recent experience, I will go ahead and say no.

The promises of snow

At Hult, we have long been promised by the Dean that there would be coming a lot of snow, and many of the Bostonians talk proudly of the snow that came last year (Based on their descriptions it was so much that it apparently covered some of the sky scrapers). As a winter-loving Norwegian I had high expectations, and like many times before, I just ended up disappointed. There have been snow here four times so far, but never have there been more than 5 cm, but the Dean kept insisting that the real snow would be here soon. Four months since the first “snow storm”, the snow has yet to settle for more than 4 days. No wonder I am disappointed. Still, even if the snow is expected, they somehow manage to create a chaos that is worthy of remembrance.

The train

So not long ago, I had friends visiting from Norway whom landed in New York to take the train to Boston. This day it was about 2 cm (at most), but still the train got postponed for two hours.

The traffic

Already as the first snowflake hits the road, the chaos appear. Being in a school that has direct view to the highway, I have become fascinated by the happenings. The cars slows down at first, but then end up completely stopping because one or two drivers believes that those three snowflakes is going to smash their car. Everything behind those cars stops, except for one impatient idiot in an SUV that tries to bulldoze itself through all the other cars, until the inevitable crash happens and everyone is stuck there for several hours.

The school

So what fascinates me the most is the school. Yesterday, they decided to close almost all the schools in the area, and Hult decided to cancel classes. Finally a snow day where you can go out and have fun in the snow. If only there were enough snow to have fun in. The five cm that came last night seem to have turned everything on the head. I am not sure if they just have a snow day so that we do not go home to our countries and say there were no snow days, or if the Dean simply had to do it since she had promised us a snow day.

To be fair, even though there were almost no snow, it was kind of nice having a Monday off from school. I am not complaining, only fascinated by the fact that they proudly brag about how much snow they got here, what they define as a snow storm (wind and maybe two to five cm of snow), and how low the bar is to shut down infrastructure just for a tiny bit of snow.

Fun fact: The initial purpose of Viagra was to prevent high blood pressure and heart diseases, but did not have the outcome they had hoped for. It didn’t prevent any heart disease and did not prevent high blood pressure. However, the men found it to be very useful for a completely different purpose.
