Going home
From Boston, Massachusetts to Bergen, Norway. I have probably experienced the most challenging period of my life, with it being disrupted within two days. I would love to tell you about the story.
I was long set on staying in Boston for several months yet and the master’s degree was not even finished before I had to leave. With a job, place to stay, and great friends, I was ready to kick start the next chapter of my life. How wrong I was. On a Friday afternoon, I was set on staying, and honestly thought it would be better to just stay in the US for the period as the coronavirus hadn’t reached the US yet. Again, I was wrong.
On Saturday I watched the Norwegian government having a press conference, on Monday I left and on Tuesday I was set in a two-week quarantine in an apartment in the middle of the now deserted Bergen city center. There I did my final exam, had my graduation party, and slowly went crazy as I started talking to the owner of the apartment’s picture of ex Chelsea-footballer Didier Drogba. I was not in a very good place at that moment, but it slowly improved as I resumed my connection with my geographically distant friends.
My quarantine ended, and I went back to my hometown with sanity slowly returning to normal. I got to go outside, go skiing, do activities, but even that gets boring when motivation falters. I have worked every opportunity I could since I was 12, but now I was unemployed with my work centering around a part-time job with a 6 hour time difference crashing with every single thing I did.
I had to get back to work. Despite the disappointment and the feeling of having ‘lost’ the battle, I am eternally grateful that I get to contribute to ensuring our society still functions as well as possible and I see how lucky I am. All those jobs that I have done since I was 12, all the education I have taken have led me to where I am now. At the cashier of a Supermarket. And I am super proud of it. However, I hope I can wow someone with my knowledge and skills soon. I’m really looking forward to contributing to what I am best at: Marketing.
